I think sometimes we have to step back and just let God be God. I don't think I will ever understand fully what is happening in that area. I see people looking for that big Holy Spirit experience and wanting it so bad they really just subconsciously fake it. I actually knew of one boy who faked tongues so his pastor would leave him alone.
I think just walking in His presence while living everyday life is a good start even if you have been saved for a long time. That is the only way I think He can or will touch our lives in a way that we know He is with us. I would suggest reading "Practising the Presence of God" by Bother Lawrence. It is an old writing but it has merit and is still in publication in modern english
